Sleepless Nights Are Good for the Soul

I used to really loathe sleepless nights.

And let’s be honest — I’m still not a huge fan of them. (Who is, right?) But a part of me has learned to treasure them, because they create such special pockets of time with the Lord I wouldn’t otherwise have.

I recently went on a four day trip, and in full transparency, I had a hard time leaving home because I knew I probably wouldn’t sleep well while I was away. (Anybody else also a homebody to their core?)

And sure enough, when the first night rolled around, I couldn’t for the life of me fall asleep. My brain was on overload and the thoughts started to scream… and scream loud. So I prayed.

At first, the prayer was something along the lines of, “God! Please help me fall asleep! I’m begging you!” (I’m not dramatic in the middle of the night, I swear.) When that didn’t work, I started to praise Him. To thank Him. To whisper prayers of gratitude and thanksgiving for all He’s done and all I know He will do.

And the next thing I remember is waking up to my alarm the next morning.

I don’t know how long I actually laid there. It felt like hours. It was probably minutes. But regardless of how long it took for Him to enter in and help me drift off to sleep, He was faithful to show up.

To comfort.

To hold.

To remind me that He was there and I wasn’t alone. No then and not ever. And He’s with you too, friend.

If you’re going through a season of sleepless nights and have tried all you know to do, go run to your Father tonight. Whisper quiet prayers of everything that’s on your mind and in your heart. Hold out your hands and envision that He’s holding them… because He is.

And if you just can’t find the words to pray, simply whisper His Name. There is so much power in the mighty name of Jesus, and His Word promises that if we call on Him, He will always answer.

God’s got you, tonight, friend. He’s enough. And whenever you draw near to Him, He will draw near to you.

Every single time.
