Growing in Gratitude

Growing in Gratitude

Thank you for these people, God.

I know I don’t thank you for them nearly enough. Why is it so easy to take for granted the things that mean the most?

Yes, I lift them up to you often.
I pray for their health and safety.
I pray for their healing.
I pray for your wisdom and guidance over them.
I pray for their hearts and their futures.

But if I’m being honest, in my day to day life, I tend to find myself more overwhelmed with negativity rather than overwhelmed with gratitude.

“Why is my husband home late AGAIN?”
“ Why can’t the baby just fall asleep!”
“For the love, why won’t my toddler just freaking listen to me?!”

The prayers I’m lifting up are much more often “God, do something!” instead of “Father, thank you.”
And it shouldn’t be that way.

And I got to thinking…

What if instead of begging God to change the hiccup in front of me, I chose to thank him for the person in front of me?

How much healthier would my heart be?
How much stronger would my faith be?
How much happier would my life be?

I’m thinking a lot.

So God, on this Thanksgiving Day, I want to say thank you.

Thank you for a husband who works so dang hard for his family and loves us with his whole heart.
Thank you for a four year old who feels so deeply and lives life so passionately.
Thank you for a baby girl who finds comfort and safety in her mama’s arms, and thank you that I get to be that mama.

Thank you for a house that is filled with love and laughter, even on the not-so-good days.

Thank you for a life that is full of so much stinking joy, simply because they’re in it.

Thank you for this family that you’ve created. Help my heart grow with gratitude for them each and every day.
